On April 26, Jiangxi launched its second provincial laboratory—Gannan Laboratory. The first, Nanchang Laboratory, was launched on April 28, 2023. It took two years to prepare the second, underscoring the weight of provincial laboratories. These labs are new entities born from innovation practice: high-level new R&D institutions led by the provincial government, involving multiple participants and standardized operations, typically regarded as flagship platforms in a province's innovation system. In recent years, most provinces have accelerated the construction of such labs. Naming: The 2024 provincial government work report stated: 'Three new national key laboratories added, and the first provincial laboratory—Nanchang Laboratory—started construction.' The 2025 report said: 'Taihang National Laboratory Jiangxi Innovation Center approved for construction, national key laboratories reach 6; provincial key laboratories restructured to 172.' These terms include national laboratories, national key laboratories, provincial laboratories, and provincial key laboratories. National laboratories are strategic scientific forces at the national level. National key laboratories, reorganized from former state key laboratories, are important supports. Provincial labs similar at provincial level. Understanding the value, back to naming logic: Zhejiang's Zhijiang Laboratory (full name: Intelligent Science and Technology Zhejiang Provincial Laboratory) is among the earliest. Subsequent ones like West Lake Lab, Yongjiang Lab, Oujiang Lab. Hunan, Shandong also name as 'specific name + lab' using place names, mountains, rivers, etc. Jiangxi's Nanchang Lab and Gannan Lab follow suit. Rich culture and mountains may inspire future names. Structure: Most provinces manage provincial labs as independent legal entities, with modes like 'core + sub-center' or 'main + sub-center'. Many have a council, director responsibility system under council, and academic committee. Gannan Lab relies on Jiangxi University of Science and Technology, co-built by Ganzhou city, Yingtan city, and Nanchang University. Besides Ganzhou HQ, it has Yingtan Center, Nanchang Center, and several achievement transformation bases. First council chairman: Ganzhou mayor Li Kejian; first academic committee chair: Academician Mao Xinping; executive director: Yang Bin, party secretary of Jiangxi University of Science and Technology. Nanchang Lab is an independent legal entity hosted by Nanchang University, co-built by provincial government, Nanchang city, Nanchang High-tech Zone, and Nanchang University, with a 'one core, multiple points, N bases' approach. Director: Academician Jiang Fengyi. This means provincial labs don't operate alone but in 'combined operations', leveraging external experts and cultivating young talents. The academic committee is the soul, composed of high-level experts. For Gannan Lab, vice chairs and members include academicians Xie Jianxin, Nie Zuoren, Yang Chunhe, Ge Shirong, Zhao Zhongwei, etc. Nanchang Lab has already recruited: in February it advertised 17 PhD positions without time limit. Understanding the province's determination reveals opportunities. Missions: Launching the lab is a good start; creating value with original and leading scientific results to drive industry development is key. Scientific research takes decades. Jiang Fengyi's team spent 19 years developing silicon-based LED, breaking Japanese and US monopoly. This led to Nanchang Lab based on the National Silicon-based LED Engineering Research Center, aiming for more innovations. Nanchang Lab's mission: focus on high-end equipment, healthy lighting, near-eye display, electronic devices, new detection, implement 'enterprise-oriented science-education integration', conduct strategic, basic, and pioneering science across the industry chain, nurture hard-tech industries, and contribute to technological self-reliance. The journey from lab to production line is not smooth. Nanchang Lab researchers are diligently exploring. Currently, Nanchang Lab on Yaohu Science Island is in final construction phase. The 'one lab, one island' prospect is promising. Similarly, Gannan Lab's mission relates to its key research: advanced metal materials and critical mineral development. Co-builder Yingtan's copper-based new material industry (especially the Yingraofuchang copper-based new material cluster selected as national advanced manufacturing cluster), Ganzhou's 'Rare Earth Kingdom' and the urgent need to extend the rare earth industry chain, improve added value, and competitiveness, plus broad application space in Jiangxi Copper and Jiangxi Tungsten, make Gannan Lab's work arduous. Academicians at the launch offered suggestions and expressed confidence.
